Ovary-Sparing Spay & Vasectomy

Ovary-Sparing Spay & Vasectomy: Balanced Alternatives for Your Dog
A Modern Approach to Reproductive Health
At Cedar Hill Animal Clinic, we're proud to offer two advanced surgical alternatives to traditional spay and neuter procedures: Ovary-Sparing Spay (OSS) and Vasectomy. These procedures allow pet owners to choose what's best for their dog's individual needs - balancing responsible populational control with the long-term benefits of maintaining natural hormones.

Ovary-Sparing Spay (OSS)
An Ovary-Sparing Spay involves removing the uterus and cervix, while leaving the ovaries intact. Your dog will not be able to become pregnant, but will continue to produce normal levels of estrogen and progesterone.  and behavioral health.

Potential Benefits of OSS
  • Maintenance of natural metabolism and muscle tone.
  • Preserves normal metabolism and growth.
  • Improved bone and joint integrity (especially in large breeds)
  • Better coat quality and skin health.
  • Lower risk of urinary incontinence.
  • Stable behavior and temperament.

Considerations
  • Females will still experience hormonal cycles ("heat") though without discharge.
  • OSS is not suitable for every dog; - pre-surgical  consultation and imaging are recommended.

Vasectomy
A Vasectomy prevents pregnancy by removing or sealing a small section of vas deferens, the tube that carries sperm. Testicles remain intact, so your dog retains normal testosterone levels.

Potential Benefits of Vasectomy
  • Preservation of natural hormone balance.
  • Maintenance of muscle tone and drive (ideal for working or performance dogs).
  • Avoidance of growth plate issues linked to early neutering.
  • No sperm = no risk of pregnancy.

Considerations
Picture
  • Male dogs may still display interest.
  • Testosterone-driven behaviors (like marking or dominance) may persist, but are often manageable through training.
Is OOS or Vasectomy Right for My Dog?

These options are best for owners who:
  • Want to maintain hormonal balance and natural development.
  • Have secure, well-managed environments to prevent accidental breeding.
  • Participate in sports, working, or breeding programs.
  • Prefer a holistic approach to health and longevity.

Our veterinarians will discuss your dog's age, breed, lifestyle, and health goals to determine which option best supports their wellbeing.
