End of life care:
- What is end-of-life care for pets? End-of-life care focuses on comfort, dignity, and quality of life for pets facing terminal illness, advanced age, or declining health. This may include pain management, supportive care, and guidance for families as they navigate difficult decisions.
- How do I know when it may be time to consider euthanasia? Every pet and situation is different. Common signs may include ongoing pain, difficulty breathing, loss of appetite, decreased mobility, or a noticeable decline in enjoyment of daily activities. Our doctors can help assess your pet’s quality of life and discuss options when you are unsure.
- What happens during a euthanasia appointment? Euthanasia appointments are scheduled with care and compassion. Your pet will first receive medication to help them relax and fall into a deep, peaceful sleep. Once they are comfortable, a final medication is administered that allows them to pass gently and without pain. We encourage you to stay with your pet throughout the process if you are able.
- Can we have time with our pet before and after euthanasia? Yes. We understand how important this time is. Our team will ensure you have privacy and the time you need to say goodbye both before and after the procedure.
- Do you offer quality-of-life consultations? Yes. Quality-of-life consultations are available to help families evaluate their pet’s comfort, daily functioning, and overall wellbeing. These appointments are designed to provide guidance, not pressure, and to support informed, compassionate decision-making.
- What options are available for aftercare? We offer several aftercare options, including private cremation, communal cremation, and the return of ashes, depending on your preferences. We also offer memorial items such as paw prints and fur clippings. Our team will review these options with you and answer any questions you may have.
- Can children or other pets be present? Children and other pets may be present if you feel it is appropriate. We are happy to discuss what to expect and help you decide what feels best for your family.
- How do I prepare for an end-of-life appointment? There is no “right” way to prepare. Some families bring a favorite blanket, toy, or treats. We encourage you to do what feels most comforting for you and your pet. Our team will guide you through the process and answer any questions along the way.
- What support is available after we say goodbye? Cedar Hill offers one-on-one grief support with a veterinary social worker through any stage. Losing a pet is deeply personal, and support looks different for everyone, please ask for the social worker if you would like extra support during this time. Please let us know if you would like information on pet loss support options.
